Week #4


Week 4 Introduction to the range of new literacies.

Assignment 1

 What gaming elements provide users the learning content and how? (Refer to the journal article page 4).
Text:  Students read the titles of the book in order to decide what belongs and what doesn’t.
·         Visual-graphic elements: Visual Elements play a big role in the game flood and act as a motivating factor.
·         Audio elements: instructions and prompts are given through audio elements.

2. What is the goal of the game?
The goal of a game is to characterize items and distinguish what doesn’t belong.

3. What are rules of playing this game?
The rules are you must choose what belongs and what doesn’t in a given amount of time.
4. Does this game have any scenario design? (Refer to the journal article page 5.) If yes, is this a fabricated or embedded in curriculum-related content?
No the game does not have scenario design.
Assignment 2
Grade level: 3
Common core standards and learning outcomes: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
Instructional activities (how does this game help develop language acquisition and development, both oral and written, be creative?)
The teacher should show students how to create a graphic organizer, and how to decide what is appropriate to be part of a writing. Then students can play the game “Flood”. In this game players have to choose which “books” belong and which don’t.
Assessment: The teacher can assess how well the students does on the game, and how well the students can sift information.
Debriefing : After playing the game teacher can create the same game , replacing objects with facts and students have to decide what to add to their writing and what to throw out, and discuss why some pieces of information are important and some are not.
What cognitive skills do this game help to cultivate? This game cultivates cognitive , and auditory skills
What new literacies skills do this game help to cultivate (refer to the journal article page 2 and 3)?
    In order to get to the game players must know how to search the internet. To play the game players will familiarize themselves with computers and its tools.

  1. This sounds like an interesting game. I like how you introduce the topic with the graphic organizer, then bring in the game as a fun way of solidifying what belongs and what doesn't.
